Hairpins walk. Gates drop. Hooks wedge.
Traditional hairpin J-hooks shed pins on rough roads, snag clothing and arms, and jam when the top takes an impact or a boot. Import wire often runs nominal 7/16″ or 1/2″. A production trailer should not ship with that fight built in.
Why it holds
Locknut keeps the pin on the hook
Threaded rod and locknut stay put on rough roads. The tailgate is not supposed to flop open in transit.
No snag hairpin
The locknut kit drops the sharp cotter that catches sleeves and skin.
Squared top resists wedging
Impact or a boot used as a step is less likely to jam the hook so someone has to hammer it loose.
Heavier wire, better plating
9/16″ wire vs common import 7/16–1/2″. Yellow zinc dichromate. Two un-plated tube diameters (CA-875-2, CA-1125-1.5) for frame and tailgate fit.

Tailgate J-hook latch kits
Pick the assembly that matches your print. Each kit ships hook, spring, and weld-on tubes together, not a loose J-bolt from a fastener house. Custom and standard sizes.

FAQ
Can you handle large OEM volumes?
Yes. Large-volume OEM orders for Tailgate J-hook latch kits ship from the manufacturing plant with consistent supply.
Do you do custom?
Yes. Custom and standard sizes on the J-hook and kit lines. For large-volume changes to the locknut design, send the print to sales@hardwaremfg.com.
Materials and plating?
Steel J-hook CA-56-3.25 is CRS or Type 1018 or 1215. Yellow zinc dichromate on the locknut kit, or silver zinc on the traditional kit. Tubes are the same steels, un-plated for weld. An all-aluminum J-hook (3/4″ diameter) is available.
Tolerances?
Angles ±1°. Dimensions to two places ±.015, to three places ±.005. Full numbers are on the drawing and the J-Hook PDF.
